Vertebral Artery
Definition
Branch of the first part of the subclavian artery.
supplies the brain, and spinal cord
It is part of the vertebrobasilar system.

Course
Through the foramina in the transverse processes of all the cervical vertebrae exce[t the seventh.
Curves behind the lateral mass of the atlas
Enters the skull through the foramen magnum
At the lower border of the pons forms the basilar artery joining its counterpart.

Branches
Spinal branches enter the vertebral canal through the intervertebral foramina.

Applied anatomy
The vertebral artery is an alternative to the carotid system
Through the anstomosis between the carotid system and the vertebral system blood supply to the brain is maintained without interruption in any position of the neck
If there is any block of the vertebral system it causes vertigo since cerebellum is affected
VBI = vertebro basilar insufficiency.
